Overview

The hike to Lake Serene and Bridal Veil Falls is fantastic. Don't miss it. That said, like every great hike within an hour of Seattle, you should definitely prepare for heavy crowds unless you go on off-peak days and hours. We went on a less-than-perfect summer evening and had the place to ourselves.

Begin on an old road that soon splits off and becomes single track, criss-crossing creeks and thick canopy as it gains elevation gently. At 1.65 miles, reach the clearly signed junction where you are given the choice to head up to Bridal Veil Falls or continue on to Lake Serene. The falls is absolutely worth it, we recommend taking a right and hiking up the steep half-mile to check it out.

The trail to the falls is full of action – there's small streams to cross (your feet may get wet here) and fantastic views of the Skykomish Valley down below. Climb the final set of stairs and be treated to a thundering cascade that seems to drop right onto the trail. After heavy rains, be ready to get wet from the spray and wind coming off the falls. It's a powerful place, literally, so use extreme caution along the boulders lining the falls and creek.

Back on the main trail, cross over Bridal Veil Creek on a wooden bridge and pass by the lower section of the falls. Soon after, the trail begins to climb – switchback after switchback – up to the lake. It's fairly steep, but there are plenty of man-made features to keep the going smooth and steady. Along the way you'll again see dramatic views looking north across the Skykomish River Valley towards the town of Index.

Eventually you'll reach signage for Lake Serene (and the pit toilet). Head towards the lake and be amazed. The lake (elev. 2,521') sits at the base of Mount Index with ragged cliffs all around and cascading waterfalls in the distance. Yes indeed, this is one spectacular place.

There's plenty of room to spread out and find a spot to enjoy the views or take a dip on a sunny summer day. Feel free to explore the side trails that go partway around the lake and out to a nice lookout where the creek drains out of the lake and begins its first drop out of sight down the mountain.

Tips: Northwest Forest Pass required. Toilets at trailhead, but no water. Be careful at the waterfalls. No camping within 0.25 miles of the lake. No fires where posted. For camping information, contact the Skykomish Ranger District.

How to get there

Head east on Highway 2 towards Index.
Near milepost 35, turn right onto Mount Index Road – it's well signed. Continue on the gravel road for about a half-mile until you reach a signed fork in the road towards Lake Serene (#1068). Turn right here and follow it a little further to the large parking lot.
